Chapter 1 — The Call to Disciplined Growth

## Teaching

You can desire growth and still avoid the instruction that makes growth possible. Desire may start the journey, but disciplined obedience carries it forward.

Proverbs 12:1 says, “Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish” (KJV). This is a strong word because growth is not sentimental. GOD does not form maturity in us by agreement alone. He forms it through instruction received, correction accepted, truth practiced, and obedience repeated.

This August journey begins with a simple question: Are you willing to be taught?

To love instruction is to welcome the Word of GOD as more than comfort. It is to let Scripture correct your thinking, expose your motives, order your habits, and govern your choices. It means you stop treating correction as rejection. In the hands of GOD, correction is mercy. It keeps you from drifting further than you meant to go.

The tension is real. Instruction can confront what you prefer. Reproof can touch what you have defended. Discipline can require you to change a pattern you have called normal. But spiritual growth demands more than passive desire. It requires obedient practice.

Today, do not measure your maturity by what you know. Measure it by what you are willing to receive and obey. The call to disciplined growth is not a call to perform for GOD. It is a call to become teachable before Him.

Begin here: receive instruction, tell the truth about resistance, and choose one act of obedience you can walk out today.

## Exercise

**Instruction Inventory: Naming Your Readiness to Grow**

Set aside 15–20 minutes for this exercise. Move slowly. The goal is not to produce perfect answers. The goal is to become honest before GOD.

**Step 1: Read the Scripture aloud.** Read Proverbs 12:1 slowly three times:

“Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish” (Proverbs 12:1 KJV).

After each reading, pause. Notice the word or phrase that presses on your heart.

Write that word or phrase here:

____________________________________________________________

**Step 2: Identify the instruction GOD may be giving you.** Instruction often comes through Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, conviction, repeated patterns, or consequences. Ask: *What has GOD been trying to teach me that I have not fully received?*

Name one area:

____________________________________________________________

**Step 3: Locate your resistance.** Resistance does not always sound rebellious. Sometimes it sounds like delay, defensiveness, distraction, excuse-making, overexplaining, or spiritual language without obedience.

Check any that apply today:

- [ ] I delay what I already know to do. - [ ] I defend myself when corrected. - [ ] I avoid counsel that challenges me. - [ ] I confuse knowing Scripture with obeying Scripture. - [ ] I stay busy so I do not have to be still and honest. - [ ] I want growth without changing habits. - [ ] I receive correction outwardly but reject it inwardly.

Add your own:

**Step 4: Tell the truth without condemnation.** Correction is not the same as shame. Shame says, “I am rejected.” Correction says, “GOD is training me.” Write one honest sentence beginning with:

“Father, I have resisted Your instruction by…”

____________________________________________________________

**Step 5: Choose one act of disciplined obedience.** Do not choose something vague. Choose one measurable response you can complete today.

Examples:

- Apologize without explaining yourself away. - Read the assigned Scripture before checking your phone. - Receive wise counsel without arguing. - Stop one habit that weakens your obedience. - Complete one responsibility you have delayed. - Pray before making the decision you have been rushing.

My one act of disciplined obedience today is:

____________________________________________________________

**Step 6: Seal it in prayer.** Pray simply:

“Father, make me teachable. Help me love instruction more than comfort. Give me grace to receive correction and courage to obey what You reveal. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

## Write

1. Where do I desire spiritual growth but resist the discipline that growth requires?

---

2. What instruction has GOD already given me that I need to receive more fully?

---

3. How do I usually respond when correction touches my thoughts, habits, motives, or decisions?

---

4. What one truth must I walk—not merely know—today?

---

## Carry It Forward

Practice this week: receive one correction without defensiveness, pray over it, and obey the next clear step.

This is the opening chapter. The complete publication is available in the full edition.
